About National Hispanic Heritage Month

In the United States, we observe 'National Hispanic American Heritage Month' from September 15th to October 15th, which aims to celebrate the lives and contributions of Americans with ancestry from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America. 'National Hispanic American Heritage Month' originated in 1968 as 'Hispanic Heritage Week' under the Lydon B. Johnson administration. It was later expanded to a month-long celebration and codified into law by President Ronald Reagan in 1988. The months of September and October were chosen as a way to honor the independence of several Latin American countries, including Honduras and Mexico, which occurred during those months. Currently, Hispanic or Latino Americans make up 19% of the total U.S. population, making it the country's largest minority group. To join in on the celebrations, we are choosing to highlight titles related to the histories and contributions of Hispanic & Latinos.
