About Spooky Scary Stories: An Ode to Halloween

With the arrival of October, brings us the autumn holiday of Halloween. On Halloween, people all across the globe dress up in costumes and take part in activities like 'Trick-or -Treating'. Although most popular in the United States, Canada, and the British Isles, Halloween shares similar aspects with other autumnal holidays such as Day of the Dead (Día de Muertos) in Mexico and the Hungry Ghost Festival in East and Southeast Asia. The term 'Halloween' is derived from 'All Hallows' Even', referring to the day before 'All Saints Day' or 'All Hallows Day'. Most scholars believes Halloween traces its origins to the Christian celebration of 'Allhallowtide' and the Celtic holiday of Samhain. Irish and Scottish immigration in the 19th century resulted in Halloween becoming a mainstream holiday in the United States.
