In the United States, we celebrate the lives and contributions of Asian & Pacific Islanders in the month of May. Asian & Pacific Islander Heritage Month originated as 'Asian & Pacific Islander Heritage Week' in 1979 by U.S. Congress but was expanded to a full month in 1992. The month of May was chosen to honor the first Japanese migrants who arrived in the United States in May of 1848, and the completion of the Transcontinental Railroad in May of 1869 - which heavily relied on the labor of Chinese migrants. For Asian & Pacific Islander Heritage Month, we are highlighting titles in our collection that showcase the diverse cultures and histories of Asian & Pacific Islanders.
